Acne is every teenager’s major nightmare nowadays. It affects almost everyone at some point in their lives. It’s the most probed keyword when it comes to finding any skin condition.
Our skin has a great ability to heal on its own. When given the right amount of nutrition, acne can also be cured. But if the condition keeps coming back, it means there is something deep inside that needs to be treated.
Acne is a common skin condition, a term used for pimples, characterized by inflamed clogged pores due to multiple factors.
How to recognize those nasty culprits?
Mainly there are six types of spots caused by acne.
- Whiteheads (closed plugged pores just under the surface of the skin)
- Blackheads (open plugged pores on a surface of skin, oxidized by air)
- Papules (small, red, tender raised bumps)
- Pustules (pimples with pus at their tips)
- Nodules (large, solid, painful lumps beneath the skin)
- Cysts (large, pus-filled painful lumps beneath the skin and have a higher risk of scarring)
Provoking factors of the problem
Acne is primarily a hormonal condition, induced by a hormone named androgen. Stimulation by this hormone causes excess oil production combined with some other factors causing acne.
There are some other factors that may not have a direct role in the cause but can worsen the condition.
- Certain medications
With the advancement in the field of medicine and cosmetology, a number of options are available for treating acne. There are few self-care activities you should do at home to avoid acne or clearing up existing acne.
Self-care to avoid acne
- Avoid taking stress, take good 8 hours sleep and drink as much water as you can.
- Try not to squeeze out or touch your pimple.
- Regularly cleansing the skin using a mild soap or antibacterial cleansers containing benzoyl peroxide to remove oil and dirt.
- Exfoliate your skin using a mild exfoliant that contains salicylic acid or glycolic acid.
- Apply an ice cube on your face to shrunken pores.
- Always use water-based makeup that is non-comedogenic.
- Good facials with steaming can clear out pores, thus getting rid of blackheads and whiteheads.
- Aloe Vera and honey: Mix a small amount of honey with aloe Vera gel and use it for one week as a spot treatment at night.
- Honey and cinnamon: Mix both the ingredients and apply on face. Leave it for 10-15 minutes and wash it off with Luke warm water.
- Oats, neem powder and aloe Vera: Mix all these ingredients and apply on a face and massage with light hands for 10-15 minutes then wash it off later.
Acne may be mild (few occasional guests), moderate (inflamed papules) or severe (cysts). Treatment is given according to the severity of the condition.
Oral and topical antibiotics kill the bacteria that worsens the acne and reduces inflammation. It also helps in reducing symptoms and prevent scarring.
Topical antibiotics or modern typical options: Topical antibacterial agents include erythromycin, clindamycin, sulfacetamide, azelaic acid.
Retinoids, AHA, BHA are newer remedies for acne these days, helping improve sebum production and removes dead skin cells.
Oral antibiotics: include tetracycline, doxycycline, amoxicillin and sulfa drugs. Antibiotics should only be used after consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.
Other techniques and treatments:
- Light treatments use medications along with photosensitizing lights or lasers to reduce oil production.
- Chemical peels use high potency acid like glycolic acid, applied superficially to remove an upper layer of skin and minimize deep scars.
- Micro-needling or dermabrasion technique is a far most effective technique to remove deeper acne scars.
Acne can be treated and controlled at home but we cannot completely cure it. Most people expect their acne to go away in a few days, but it takes at least six to eight weeks for acne symptoms to get improved. Keeping a proper skin routine with good hygiene can not only improve the condition but can also prevent acne from coming back.
